The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Rise up and warn! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 and purify your robes, 4 And all defilement shun! 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And give him vast riches, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then looked he, 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves and spares no one and nothing. 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
