The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise and warn, 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And uncleanness do shun, 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and children living in his presence, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire, and We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty [that this Quran is the truth as it agrees with their Books i.e. their number (19) is written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and the believers may increase in Faith (as this Quran is the truth) and that no doubts may be left for the people of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: "What Allah intends by this (curious) example?" Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. And this (Hell) is nothing else than a (warning) reminder to mankind. 31
