He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ (The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 For him who does not care, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 But he who comes to you running, 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he. 17 Of what did He create him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow. 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 then, He will raise him when He wills. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And Grapes and nutritious plants, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
