He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself, 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As for him who regardeth himself self-sufficient 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 and in awe of God 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 upon highly honored pages, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 Noble and pious. 16 Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he. 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From Nutfah (male and female semen drops) He created him, and then set him in due proportion; 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and herbage 28 And olives and palms 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 Laughing, joyous. 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 Blackness will cover them. 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
