He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 Now he who waxes indifferent, 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 And whereas he fears, 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 and olives, and palms, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 and from his mother and father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
