He Frowned ('Abasa)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 to a rich man, 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 and fearfully, 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 and thereupon We cause grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 and olives and palms, 29 Orchards thick with trees, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 laughing and joyous 39 And some faces will on that Day with dust be covered, 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 It is they, the disbelievers, the sinners. 42
