He Frowned ('Abasa)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 As for him who regardeth himself self-sufficient 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 And for him who came to you striving, 8 And he feareth 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 Let him who will, pay heed to it. 12 (It is) in Records held (greatly) in honour (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz). 13 Exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes (angels). 15 noble and purified. 16 May (the disbelieving) human being be condemned! What makes him disbelieve? 17 From what has God created him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 We send down abundant water, 25 Then We cleave the earth, cleaving (it) asunder, 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 and his consort and his children; 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 Laughing and full of joy, 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 It is they, the disbelievers, the sinners. 42
