Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the Dawn 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 [But unto the righteous God will say,] "O thou human being that hast attained to inner peace! 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 Join My servants. 29 "Yea, enter thou My Heaven! 30
