Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER the daybreak 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)? 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His! 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 So enter among My servants, 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
