Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 And ten nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 By no means! But ye honour not the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
