Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Dawn 1 And the Ten Nights, 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 none shall bind as He binds. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him. 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 into My Paradise. 30
