Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the Dawn 1 And by ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 and by the passing night, 4 is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 (It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 yea, enter thou My paradise!" 30
