Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Dawn 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 By the even and odd (contrasted); 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Did you not see how did your Lord deal with (the tribe of) Aad? 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 All of them committed excesses in their lands, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 Join My worshipers and 29 And enter into My garden. 30
