The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
