The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
