The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
