The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
