Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
