The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By oath of the sun and its light 1 And by the moon as it follows it (the sun); 2 And by oath of the day when it reveals it 3 And the night when it enshroudeth him, 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 The earth and its spreading out, 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 and inspired it to lewdness and godfearing! 8 Indeed successful is the one who made it pure. 9 And he who confines it will surely come to grief. 10 (The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride, 11 when the most wretched of them uprose, 12 And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink." 13 Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
