The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 and by the moon when she follows him, 2 The day when it reveals his radiance, 3 The night when it covers him over, 4 by the heavens and that (Power) which established them, 5 and by the earth and how He spread it, 6 And by oath of the soul and by oath of Him Who made it proper. 7 and inspired it with its sin and its piety, 8 He who purifies it will prosper, 9 and failed is he who buried it! 10 The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing, 11 When the most wicked among them stood up in defiance. 12 But the Messenger of Allah [Salih (Saleh)] said to them: "Be cautious! Fear the evil end. That is the she-camel of Allah! (Do not harm it) and bar it not from having its drink!" 13 But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings). 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
