The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
