The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Verify on us is the guidance 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 and confers no favour on any man for recompense, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise). 21
