The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and believes in the finest, 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And none hath with him any favour for reward, 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 He verily will be content. 21
