The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 As for he who gives and fears Allah 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 Unto him therefore We shall indeed make easy the path to ease. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Verify on us is the guidance 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 So, I warn you of the blazing Fire. 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 Who had denied and turned away. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
