The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who hath created 1 created Man of a blood-clot. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One 3 who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man what he did not know. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 Because he considers himself self-sufficient. 7 for, behold, unto thy Sustainer all must return. 8 What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids 9 a worshipper from praying? 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 He would enjoin piety, so how good it would be! 12 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 his lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then let him summon his council, 17 We will call the angels of Hell. 18 No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. ۩ 19
