The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Recite: and your Lord is Most Generous, 3 Who teacheth by the pen, 4 Taught man what he did not know. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 That he thinketh himself independent! 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the return. 8 Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth 9 a worshipper from praying? 10 Bethinkest thou, if he is himself guided, 11 Or enjoins Righteousness? 12 Did you consider: what if he gives the lie (to the Truth) and turns away (from it)? 13 Does he not know that God observes all things? 14 Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,- 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 So let him now call his gang! 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
