The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Recite in the name of your Lord who created - 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 because he thinks himself self-sufficient: 7 Surely! Unto your Lord is the return. 8 Bethinkest thou him who forbiddeth, 9 A slave when he prayeth? 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 Or enjoined guarding (against evil)? 12 Have you considered if he gives the lie to the truth and turns (his) back? 13 Does he not know that God sees? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 the lying, rebellious forehead! 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We will now call the guards! 18 No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God. ۩ 19
