The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Recite in the name of your Lord Who created, 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite! Your Lord is the most Honorable One, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay! man is most surely inordinate, 6 whenever he believes himself to be self-sufficient: 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 Have you seen the one who prohibits 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Hast thou considered whether he is on the right way, 11 Or had enjoined piety, (it would have been better)? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 does he not know that Allah sees? 14 Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock - 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 and then let him summon [to his aid] the counsels of his own [spurious] wisdom, 17 We shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
