So, when the envoys came to the folk of Lot, 61 he said to them: 'I do not know you' 62 They said: nay! we have come to thee with that whereof they have been dubitating. 63 and we are bringing thee the certainty [of its fulfilment]: for, behold, we are speaking the truth indeed. 64 Leave the town with your family sometime during the night. Walk behind them and let no one turn around. Proceed as you are commanded." 65 We informed him that the unbelievers would be utterly destroyed. 66 The people of the city came to him rejoicing. 67 Said Lot: "These are my guests; do not put me to shame, 68 "But fear Allah, and shame me not." 69 They said, 'Have we not forbidden thee all beings?' 70 He said, 'These are my daughters, if you would be doing.' 71 By your life O dear Prophet (Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) – they are indeed straying in their intoxication. 72 An explosion struck them at sunrise. 73 And We turned the city upside down, and rained on them stones of hardened lava. 74 Indeed in that are signs for those who discern. 75 And lo! it is upon a road still uneffaced. 76 Verily in that is a sign for the believers. 77 Since the People of the Forest were unjust, 78 and so We inflicted Our retribution on them. And behold, both these [sinful communities] lived by a highway, [to this day] plain to see 79
