'Ad (people) belied the Messengers. 123 Recall, when their brother Hud said to them: "Have you no fear? 124 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust: 125 So fear God and listen to me. 126 I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 127 “What! You build a structure on every height, to laugh at the passers-by?” 128 and make for yourselves mighty castles, [hoping] that you might become immortal? 129 And when you lay hands (on men) you lay hands (like) tyrants; 130 Rather keep your duty to Allah, and obey me. 131 Fear Him who has given you all the things you know. 132 Who has provided you with flocks and children 133 “And with gardens and water-springs.” 134 Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an awful day. 135 They said: "It is the same to us whether you preach or be not of those who preach. 136 "This is no other than the false-tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 19, Page 97] 137 They rejected him and We destroyed them. 138 In response they denied him – We therefore destroyed them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 139 And lo! thy Lord, He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 140
