The Ad gave the lie to the Messengers. 123 Their brother Hud asked them, "Why do you not have fear of God? 124 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 125 So fear God and listen to me. 126 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 127 Build ye on every eminence a landmark in vanity? 128 and raise strong mansions as if you were to live forever? 129 "And when ye exert your strong hand, do ye do it like men of absolute power? 130 So fear Allah and obey me. 131 "And keep your duty to Him, fear Him Who has aided you with all (good things) that you know. 132 "Freely has He bestowed on you cattle and sons,- 133 gardens and fountains. 134 "Verily, I fear for you the torment of a Great Day." 135 They replied, "It makes no difference to us whether you preach or do not preach, 136 This [religion of ours] is none other than that to which our forebears clung, 137 We will not be subjected to any chastisement." 138 So they rejected him; and We destroyed them. There is certainly a sign in that; but most of them would not believe. 139 Verily your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 140
