Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said, “This is the she-camel – one day shall be her turn to drink, and on the other appointed day, shall be your turn.” 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
