The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
