Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
