(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
