(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they killed her, and then they became regretful. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
