Thamud denied the messengers 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
