The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
