The Romans (Al-Room)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 The Romans have been defeated 2 (within a few years) they will be victorious. 3 Within three to nine years. To Allah belongs the command before and after. And that day the believers will rejoice 4 In Allah succour. He succoureth whomsoever He will, and He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 5 It is a promise of Allah. Allah faileth not His promise, but most of mankind know not. 6 They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world (i.e. the matters of their livelihood, like irrigating or sowing or reaping, etc.), and they are heedless of the Hereafter. 7 Have they never thought to themselves that Allah did not create the heavens and the earth and all that is between except with truth, and for a stated term? Yet most people disbelieve that they will ever meet their Lord. 8 Have they not journeyed in the land and observed what wise hath been the end of those before them? They were stronger than they in power and they broke up the earth and they inhabited it with greater affluence than these have inhabited it, and their apostles came unto them with evidences. And Allah was not one to wrong them, but themselves they were wont to wrong. 9 Therefore evil was the end of those who did evil, for they denied the signs of God and made fun of them. 10
