Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Clear Book. 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
