Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Clear Book. 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 Whereon every wise command is made clear 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And comfort wherein they were amused. 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
