Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
