Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
