Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 On the Day whereon We assault them with the greatest assault, verily We shall take vengeance. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
