Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha Mim 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
