The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it setteth. 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 His eye did not waver, nor did it stray, 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 and your third idol al-Manat (whom you considered as God's daughters)? 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 These are only names given by yourselves and your fathers. God has not given them any authority. They, (unbelievers), only follow mere conjecture and the desires of their souls, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
