Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I swear by the daybreak, 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say: "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life [to come]!" 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 Enter then My garden." 30
