The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes). 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 Then he approached and descended 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 his eyes did not swerve, nor did they stray 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
