The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ When the Terror descends 1 There is about its happening no lie. 2 It will abase some and exalt others. 3 When the earth is shaken violently, 4 and the mountains will crumble 5 and become a dust, scattered, 6 and you shall be three bands -- 7 Thus, there shall be such as will have attained to what is right: oh, how [happy] will be they who have attained to what is right! 8 Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 9 And the preceders are the preceders. 10 They shall be the nearest to God. 11 In the Gardens of Pleasure, 12 a large group of the early believers, 13 And a few of the later peoples, 14 On couches in wrought with gold. 15 Reclining on them, facing each other. 16 There wait on them immortal youths 17 Cups and decanters, beakers full of sparkling wine, 18 a drink by which their minds will not be clouded nor will it cause drunkenness; 19 And fruit that they prefer 20 And with flesh of fowls from that which they desire. 21 They will have maidens with large, lovely black and white eyes, 22 like unto pearls [still] hidden in their shells. 23 [And this will be] a reward for what they did [in life]. 24 They shall not hear therein vain or sinful discourse, 25 Except the saying, “Peace, peace.” 26 The companions of the right - what are the companions of the right? 27 [They will be] among lote trees with thorns removed 28 and flower-clad acacias, 29 And a shade ever-spread. 30 By water flowing constantly, 31 And fruit abundant. 32 unfailing and not forbidden. 33 And exalted thrones. 34 Lo! We have created them a (new) creation 35 and made them virgins, 36 intensely loving and of matching age. 37 for the people of the right hand 38
