a large group of the earlier people 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
